The Story Behind “The Bitch”

This starter has been alive since 1907 and has only lived in three households—mine included. I received the last remaining portion of her as a birthday gift from my half-brother. It belonged to his grandmother and had already been in her family for a century.

At the time, I had just finished culinary school and was working as a young chef in San Francisco. One of the books that inspired me to become a chef as a child—Kitchen Confidential by the late Anthony Bourdain—told a story about a starter named “The Bitch.” She made incredible bread. So does ours.

This starter is a piece of our family, and we’re honored to share her with you. When she arrives in your home, we encourage you to name her—make her part of your own story. She’s meant everything to us, and we know she’ll mean something to you too.

What a game changer this starter has been! I tried making one from scratch and killed it after a month and only made one terrible loaf. Since getting my 119 year old starter in the mail, I was able to feed it and bake with it the very next day and have made 3 beautiful and delicious loaves so far! I love that having such an active starter takes the stress out of baking. She rises beautifully, then I can put her in the fridge when I’m done. Highly recommend!

I received Little Ranch Family's starter in the mail one week ago, and it has been strong and healthy! It took a couple of days to really get going. Also the instructions were the same color as the packaging, both brown, so at first I accidentally threw out the instructions. I would recommend getting a brighter colored envolope for the instructions! But so far I have been really happy with it and already cooked two fantastic loaves that my family loves!

WOW is she active! I had killed my starter after going a little too long between feedings and wanted to give “The Bitch” a try. Fed her the first day according to the instructions and then day 2 fed her what I was feeding my starter and she almost grew out of the jar! My starter never got close to ever doing that with the same ratios. Can’t wait to use the discard and make loaves!!

Little Ranch Family starter is incredible! 10 out of 10! Before, I was struggling with my starter. It was giving me pretty good loaves, but nothing compared to the ones I’m making now with Little Ranch Family starter. This starter is freaking nuts!! I opened my package in the evening, fed the brand new starter following instructions, and by morning, my jar was overflowing with bubbly, super active starter. I struggled with building my own starter for a long time, and for about 6 months constantly tried and failed to make a single successful loaf and gave up. I'm so glad I bought this starter because baking loaves is ridiculously easy now. I've only had this starter for a week and i've already baked five perfect loaves, including one with apple and cinnamon I wasn't sure was going to work but it did and it's delicious. I also tried baking one in a loaf tin and it came out perfect. Thank yall so much for this starter. I can finally say i'm a sourdough baker!

I was a little hesitant that this starter wouldn’t work (based off another purchase I made from an Etsy seller that never worked no matter what I did). So glad I took the chance on this one!! I lOVE this starter!! She’s so strong and I’ve made successful loaves, and sourdough cookies since! The very first feed showed no activity but by the second feed she was alive and thriving!! She’s perfect!
